中東遜尼派恐怖聖戰組織「伊斯蘭國」（IS）5月21日攻占敘利亞中部霍姆斯省古城帕米拉之後，帕米拉博物館外一尊2000年歷史的獅子雕像慘遭破壞。
敘利亞負責文物保存的官員阿布德卡林2日表示，IS成員6月27日砸毀「拉特女神之獅」（Lion of al-Lat）雕像，這尊獨一無二的雕像高3公尺、重達15噸。他說，這是IS對帕米拉古城遺產犯下的最嚴重罪行。
這尊雕像是1977年波蘭考古隊在拉特女神廟發現的，其歷史可以追溯到公元前一世紀。
IS於2日公布若干照片，顯示武裝分子用大鐵錘砸毀6尊雕像，還有群眾圍觀，據稱被毀壞的文物掠奪自帕米拉。
IS聲稱，這些雕像在走私途中被查獲，有張照片是走私者遭受鞭打懲罰。
另一方面，聯合國教科文組織表示說，IS從伊拉克和敘利亞遺址搶奪的文物，最後落入英國收藏家手中。
聯合國教科文組織總幹事波科娃女士說，IS大規模劫掠文物，「並利用非法走私出售這些文物，以資助極端主義和恐怖主義活動」。
但波科娃並未提出證據，證明英國收藏家收購這些文物，藝術界專家也質疑其說。
